Malaysia to recruit 45,000 India workers
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's cabinet has approved entry of 45,000 workers from India to fill vacancies in 14 sectors, including textiles and restaurants, according to a report here today.
Online news portal Free Malaysia Today said the local Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MAICCI) had been empowered to bring in these foreign workers as it had been appointed as the "authorised body" by the country's home ministry to submit applications' for foreign workers in sectors like textiles, restaurants, hair-dressing, scrap metal and welfare homes.
A letter by the MAICCI sent to various agencies said that administration fees of 500 ringgit (about 8000 rupees) would be charged for each application.
The news portal said the MAICCI circular had irked other business chambers which have questioned the ministry's decision to give MAICCI monopoly over recruitment of foreign workers.
According to a source from another business chamber, by charging RM500 per application for foreign worker, MAICCI will be generating a revenue of RM23 million.
"Why has the Home Ministry appointed MAICCI as the sole authority? They should have given a few of us the right to recruit as well," the Free Malaysia Today portal quoted unnamed source as saying.
The source urged the ministry to review its decision. The source also urged the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission to probe the RM500 administration fees charged by MAICCI.
